Children's Cross-Cultural Workshops

1. A Brief Summary of the project

Children at playThe workshops will accommodate both the creative (artistic) and cross-cultural components. They are designed for children ages 4-12 from different parts of former Yugoslavia currently living in the tri-state area. We believe children will benefit greatly by improving their own knowledge of language, cultural competence and perceptions of cross-cultural issues through creative art workshops. Learning will become part of the fun!

Cross-Cultural Workshops will be filled with engaging materials and necessary tools for children to experiment with new ideas and apply skills they have already mastered. Children will explore through planned activities that incorporate language, literacy, art, writing, sculpture, cultural studies, and peace studies. Children will be able to experiment with materials such as play dough, crayons, construction paper, rocks, pasta, ceramics, fabrics (socks) and pencils. We will use materials that encourage learning such as flash cards, picture dictionaries, puppets and postcards. Workshops will be conducted in English with emphasis on cross-cultural issues, sensitivity and context.

2. The goals of the activity:

Expected outcomes: We will be directing the children toward an understanding of self and identity, of families, social groups, religions, nature, food and geography - all elements of their specific cultures.

Parents are welcome to come and relax; drink coffee/tea and chat with other parents while their children create interesting and useful products.

Targeted audience/participants: Children ages 4-12 from different parts of former Yugoslavia currently living in the tri-state area.

Outreach efforts: Timeline and description of workshops will be included in mailings; We will send members which have children ages 4 - 12 an invitation 2 weeks before each event. Parents of the children that have been visiting Raccoon's Children's Workshops in the past will be contacted by phone and inquiries will be made weather they are still interested to involve their children in raccoon's projects.
