Camp on Mt. Sljeme above Zagreb, Croatia, Raccoon organizes in cooperation with Tomislav Tiska of Snowboard Club Jeti, which is providing us with the learn-to-ride terrain and learn-to-ride snowboard equipment. The six day camp was held on Saturdays and Sundays, January 27, 28, and February 3,4,10,11: Raccoon picked up participants at scheduled dates from X-Treme Shop, Mesnicka 3, 10000 Zagreb at 9 am and took them to the Snowboard Club Yeti on Mt. Sljeme. We returned to town around 5 pm each day. We worked with the same group of kids, mostly youngsters that experienced trauma of losing a parent in the war. Last winter's program was learn-to-ride, this winter is learn-to-fly freestyle camp, exploring boxes and other slopestyle elements. A study is under way that will show participants improved in school success and behavior. Hypothesis is that programs that involve physical risk, such as this, help raise self esteem among the at-risk youth.
Due to scourge of global warming, sadly, Mt. Sljeme turned its single chairlift only one weekend this season. Fortunately it was the weekend of February 3 and 4 - the weekend our programme was visited by the US pro-rider Mike Basich, who helped participants hone their freestyle skills, while entertaining them by hitting a kinked rail. Please, check out the gallery of happy children from this years programme.
